An Interview With Jon Westhoff – ICC Magazine

An Interview With Jon Westhoff

Hello you awesome people and allow me to introduce Jon Westhoff, Writer, Letterer, and Publisher at Part-Time Comix. I’ve known Jon personally for a couple years and consider him to be a great asset to small press and indie publishing (is that redundant… it feels redundant). As much as I’d love to talk about him I think it may be more beneficial to just talk to him so without further adieu: collector, writer, and all around great guy Jon Westhoff.

Me:   How long have you been writing and publishing books?

Jon: Hey Hey! I am not a great guy yet, so please stop spreading lies about me on the internet. I have been writing and publishing since 2010! Part-Time Comix started in 2019!

Me: I’ve been keeping an eye on your kickstarter campaign for the Drumsticks of Doom four volume collection, it shot off very quickly and I’m sure you will surpass your funding goal. Do you have any advice for us mortals who are just getting familiar with crowdfunding?

Jon: Start small and reasonable. An anthology, a one shot. Get people to see, you can fulfill and they will come back. Or release your 100 issue epic, I’m not your mother.

Me: Where did you originally come up with the idea of an alternate reality where Black Sabbath is bigger than the Beatles?

Jon: The Drumsticks story started out as a young person unsure what they wanted to do with their talent and love for music. But, I figured no one would read that so I added this sick Werewolf busting up their practice. Once I had that scene I had to reverse engineer how it got there. Somewhere around 2020 it clicked as I pitched the story to co-creator Dan Dougherty. I’ve played with the idea of hell coming to earth before, but now I felt I had the only reason that made sense.

Me: I swear you are a golden idea machine your new project LCS stopped me dead in it’s tracks, would you care to explain a little bit about the story or how you came up with the idea?

Jon: I enjoy post apocalypse fiction, so it started off as just a seed of my version of what would happen after the world ends. Like drumsticks, I sat in it for years, not knowing if anyone would read about sad people who’s lives just didn’t work out. I’m not talented or confident enough (or depraved enough?) to write something like the road so I thought “well, I’m sure we’d still just want collectibles and comics and junk.” I often lean on humor, so that felt like the right angle for my version of the end times. There’s another twist in the first issue that I hope will keep you and others just as excited to read it.

Me: Is there anything else cool that you’ve got coming down the pipe?

Jon: We are fortunate enough to have a few ongoing series. Child Possession Services and Drumsticks of Doom have new issues in the works this year. We also have new series/one shots in LCS and Final Heist. It’s going to be a busy year for us, so maybe I’ll change the name to Full-Time Comix, but I’m grateful to have readers on so many titles and collaborators who want to jam together.
